Speech and Language Therapist (Adult Primarycare)

Senior Speech and Language Therapist – Adult Primary Care
Location: Dún Laoghaire, Dublin South
Contract: Full-time, Agency Contract
Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Salary: HSE aligned Senior Grade pay scale, depending on experience

Excel Recruitment is delighted to recruit a Senior Speech and Language Therapist for a supportive HSE Adult Primary Care service based in Dún Laoghaire.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Speech and Language Therapist who enjoys clinically meaningful work with older adults as the main caseload, including clients living with dementia, neurological conditions, complex communication needs and dysphagia.

The role offers a rewarding mix of complex adult communication and swallowing work across clinic, domiciliary and wider community settings, within a collaborative MDT team.

About the Role

The successful candidate will provide high-quality, evidence-based assessment, diagnosis and intervention to older adults as the primary caseload, supporting clients with a broad range of speech, language, communication and swallowing needs, including complex cases involving dementia, neurology, frailty and age-related conditions.

As a Senior Speech and Language Therapist, you will play a key role in supporting older adults with communication and swallowing needs, helping clients maintain independence, safety, confidence and quality of life within their own community.

The service provides communication and dysphagia support to older adults in clinic settings and through domiciliary visits to clients’ homes as required. You will manage a varied and complex older persons’ caseload, often assessing independently as the sole clinician, while working closely with SLT colleagues, nursing, medical, HSCP and community teams across the Integrated Healthcare Area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver high-quality Senior SLT services across complex adult communication and dysphagia caseloads.
  • Assess, diagnose and support older adults presenting with dementia, neurological conditions, frailty, complex communication needs and swallowing difficulties.
  • Provide assessment, intervention and care planning across clinic settings, domiciliary visits, clients’ homes and wider community environments.
  • Manage a varied senior-level caseload independently, including completing assessments on your own as the sole clinician where appropriate, using strong clinical reasoning and evidence-informed practice.
  • Support dysphagia management and contribute to the development of the community-based FEES service, with opportunities to further build specialist competencies in this area.
  • Contribute to service improvement and collaborative care across the region.

Requirements:

  • CORU registration, or registration in process, as a Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Significant clinical experience working with older adults, including communication disorders, dysphagia, dementia, neurological conditions, frailty and complex presentations.
  • A dysphagia qualification or equivalent, in line with IASLT standards.
  • A minimum of three years’ post-qualification experience, with the ability to work independently at Senior Grade level.
  • Strong clinical reasoning, communication and organisational skills.
  • A collaborative, practical approach and a genuine interest in adult primary care, older persons’ services and complex community-based rehabilitation.
  • Full clean driving licence and access to your own vehicle for community visits.

If you are an experienced Senior Speech and Language Therapist who would like to join a welcoming Adult Primary Care team, work with complex adult and older persons’ caseloads, develop your dysphagia experience, and make a genuine impact in the community, I would love to speak with you.
