Excel Recruitment is currently recruiting an Assistant Psychologist on behalf of a Children’s Primary Care Team in Cavan. This is an exciting opportunity to join a pilot project team focused on enhanced multidisciplinary working, supporting children with complex needs and their families.

About the Role:

Our client has a Psychology Assistant post available on a full-time agency basis for a minimum of 12 months. Working within a children’s primary care psychology service, the successful candidate will help deliver accessible, early-intervention supports to children and young people experiencing mild to moderate psychological, emotional, behavioural or developmental difficulties.

The Psychology Assistant will work under the direction of qualified Psychologists and alongside multidisciplinary primary care colleagues. The post offers valuable experience of a stepped-care model, from initial referral review and early support through to assessment and intervention, with onward referral to specialist services where appropriate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting referral triage, gathering relevant information and assisting with first-line communication with families and referrers.
  • Helping to prepare and deliver parent advice clinics, psychoeducation sessions and evidence-informed group programmes.
  • Assisting Psychologists with individual assessments and brief interventions, including preparing materials, recording outcomes and completing agreed follow-up tasks.
  • Developing practical resources for children, young people, parents and caregivers.
  • Liaising with multidisciplinary colleagues and, where appropriate, schools and other services to support coordinated care.
  • Maintaining accurate clinical records, supporting service data collection and contributing to audits or service-improvement projects.
  • Participating in induction, team meetings, training and regular clinical supervision.

Regular supervision will be provided by Psychology team members.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • A minimum of a 2.1 Honours Degree in Psychology (required for future postgraduate training routes).
  • Eligible for graduate membership of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI).
  • Previous experience (paid or voluntary) working with children, families, or mental health services is highly desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • A strong interest in primary care, early intervention, and child development.
  • Full driver’s license and access to own transport is preferred but not essential.
