Excel Healthcare have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Occupational Therapist with an interest in working with the ageing population, who also present with mental health needs, particularly those with dementia-related conditions and chronic, long-term mental health difficulties.

We are recruiting a Senior Occupational Therapist for a Later Life Psychiatry Inpatient Service in Mullingar.

This is an exciting opportunity for a compassionate and experienced Occupational Therapist with a passion for supporting older adults with complex mental health needs, including dementia-related conditions and long-term psychiatric difficulties.

Key Aspect of the role

Setting: Inpatient later life psychiatry service, Cluain Lir – a two-unit hospital dedicated to the care of older adults with psychiatric presentations.

Client Group: Older adults with dementia and/or long-standing mental health challenges now presenting with age-related needs.

As a Senior Occupational Therapist, you will play a key role in enhancing quality of life and independence for older adults through specialist OT assessment and intervention. Your work will include:

  • Delivering comprehensive OT assessments focusing on function, cognition, and daily living skills.
  • Designing and implementing compensatory strategies to support autonomy and engagement in meaningful activities.
  • Providing specialist seating and positioning assessments for clients with complex physical and cognitive needs.
  • Facilitating both individual and group programmes within the inpatient setting.
  • Leading on discharge planning in close collaboration with the Community Later Life Psychiatry OT team.
  • Contributing to service development, clinical audit, and best practice initiatives.
  • Work closely with a Senior OT in the Community Later Life Psychiatry Team.
  • Engage with a broader network of Mental Health OTs in the Mullingar area.
  • Be supported by a dedicated Mental Health Occupational Therapy Manager.
  • Collaborate daily with an experienced multidisciplinary team including psychiatry, nursing, social work, and psychology.

Essential Requirements:

  • BSc or MSc in Occupational Therapy
  • CORU Registration (essential).
  • Recognised qualification in Occupational Therapy (BSc/MSc or equivalent).
  • A strong clinical interest in older adult mental health and dementia care.
  • Confidence in delivering rehabilitation and compensatory interventions.
  • Skills or a keen interest in specialist seating and positioning.
  • Excellent clinical reasoning, communication, and documentation skills.
  • A collaborative, recovery-oriented, and person-centred approach to care.
