Tesco announce 2% pay increase

 

Tesco Ireland have announced a 2% pay increase for all staff which will be backdated to April 2015. A Tesco Ireland spokesperson said “Our business performance has not been what we would want it to be over the last few years with sales declining by -6.3% last year and -5.5% the year before.

Tesco have seen their ranking figures in decline as they continue to compete with SuperValu. They furthered ‘’We are awarding a 2% pay increase to all eligible colleagues backdated from the 1st April 2015. We have taken the decision to make this 2% pay award in recognition of the contribution our colleagues make in helping to serve Ireland’s shoppers a little better every day.’’

The Labour Court also made a recommendation that Tesco Ireland pay a bonus to staff, with the retailer saying it is not feasible at this time.

Dunnes Stores to overtake Tesco in Grocery league

Dunnes Stores are just .1% behind Tesco in the Supermarket league according to the latest figure from Kantar Worldwide panel. While Tesco remain in second place with a 24.2% market share, Dunnes Stores are seeing the merits of their recent growth figures. Sales in the Irish Fashion & Food Retailer have grown by 7% year-on-year, commanding a new market share of 24.1% and an astounding €3million increase in revenue per week, across the quarter.

SuperValu continue to dominate at the top with a market share of 25% and an increase in sales of 3.7%. Growth amongst the discounters continues to accelerate. Both Lidl and Aldi sit on par each with an 8.1% market share. The figures accounted for the 12 weeks up until February 28th and is the third successive period where growth has been above 3% for Irish Grocery.

SuperValu back on top in the supermarket wars.

Figures released by Kantar Worldwide show that SuperValu have capitalised on strides made throughout the year and have cemented themselves as top in the supermarket wars. In the week ending December 6th it shows the Irish Grocery retailer has a 24.7% stake of overall market share and experienced sales growth of 3.7% in the 12 weeks previous to December 6th.

Discount German retailer Lidl have experienced the highest level of sales growth in the same 12 week period, registering double digit sales of 10.6% with equates to 37,000 extra shoppers in store. Dunnes Stores have also continued to show considerable growth with an overall market share of 23.8%.

Managing Director of SuperValu, Martin Kelleher said ‘’ We are able to differentiate ourselves from the competition with unique selling points like having butchers in every store to provide expert advice, providing locally produced Food Academy products and an unrivalled level of customer service.’’

SuperValu regain top spot in supermarket ranking

SuperValu has regained their top spot in the supermarket rankings, pitching Tesco by .5%. SuperValu comprise a market share of 24.6% with Tesco ranking second with 24.1%. The results are based on the 12 weeks till November 8th, with Kantar Worldpanel detailing the figures.

SuperValu had previously held the top spot in the 12 weeks leading up till March 29th 2015. Director of Kantar Worldwide David Berry noted that SuperValu are ‘encouraging more repeat shopping trips. The average consumer has visited the retailer on two additional occasions and spent an extra €16 over the past quarter when compared with last year’.

Lidl outperformed all competitors with sales growth of 11.2% and were the only supermarket to boast double digit growth, resulting in an overall market share of 8.7%.

Berry furthered ‘The grocery market is arguably the most competitive retail sector and the latest figures emphasise this, with the three biggest retailers each within one percentage point of each other’.

Tesco Ireland Chairman steps down

In confirmation to Shelflife magazine, Tesco Ireland has revealed that chairman Tony Keohane has retired from his post. Keohane who has been with Tesco 37 years started out in Quinnsworth as a management trainee in 1978. He joined the Quinnsworth board in 1995 and Tesco in 1997.

He became Tesco CEO in 2007 and held this position till 2013. In a major shake up to the Tesco Ireland, commercial director John O’Reilly has left the business, as will Finance Director Adrian Lewis.

Most popular supermarkets for weekly shops revealed

Figures have been released showing where Irish consumers are likely to do their main weekly grocery shop. The continued trajectory of discount rival retailers like Lidl and Aldi, have intensified the market over the last number of years. Tesco, have come out on top with 33% of all consumers choosing to do their main weekly shop there.

Tesco have had a rough time of late with a sales trough, but in figures carried out by Checkout Magazine and Ignite Research it points them as the most popular supermarket for big spends. Tesco was also the most popular supermarket choice by females. The greatest disparity of genders was Dunnes Stores, with 19% of who were male and 11% of female.

Value for money was frequently cited as the most popular reason for shoppers in Lidl and Aldi. 86% of Aldi shoppers and 81% of Lidl shoppers believed that their respective supermarkets were the cheapest. The German discount rivals have seen the biggest rise in consumers switching.

Tesco draw level with SuperValu in Store Wars

Tesco have drawn back in the stores war and are on par with their closest rivals SuperValu. The figures were released from the Kantar Worldpanel showing the 12 week period up till the end of April have shown that Tesco commanded the same market share as SuperValu.

Also notable in the figures was German rival discounters Aldi and Lidl slowing their seemingly unperturbed growth. For the first time in five years bot only registered single digit growth. The growth rate of both Aldi and Lidl has slowed significantly. Aldi posted growth of 8.8 per cent while Lidl’s rate of growth was 7.8 per cent. This is the first time since 2010 that both Aldi and Lidl have grown their sales by less than 10 per cent.

Tesco and Supervalu, when amalgamated, represent over 50% of total market share. Tesco are fighting hard to regain top spot after SuperValu inched ahead of them last month. A representative from Kantar said ‘Intense competition between the supermarkets has resulted in more choice and better value for shoppers, highlighted by the low level of inflation and prices increasing by just 0.2 per cent’.

Dunnes registered the strongest sales growth of 3.6% bringing them from 21.5% to 22% overall. While Tesco’s market share is lower year-on-year it has improved its position versus last month. Its improvement lifted its market share to 25 per cent and places it on the same footing as SuperValu.
