Senior Occupational Therapist
Job Title: Senior Occupational Therapist – Later Life Psychiatry Inpatient Service
Location: Mullingar, Co. Westmeath
Contract Type: 0.8 WTE, 28 hour week, 1-Year Contract
Salary: Aligned with HSE Payscales for Senior Occupational Therapist
Excel Healthcare is proud to be recruiting a Senior Occupational Therapist on behalf of an inpatient Later Life Psychiatry Team based in Mullingar.
We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Occupational Therapist with a strong clinical interest in later life psychiatry and working with the ageing population.
We require an Occupational Therapist who’s confident managing complex mental health presentations in a rehabilitation-focused inpatient setting.
Key Aspects of the Role:
- Close collaboration with a Senior OT in the Community Later Life Psychiatry Team.
- Older adults with dementia and/or long-standing mental health challenges now presenting with age-related needs.
- Seating assessments and interventions, particularly for clients with complex physical and cognitive needs.
- Supporting meaningful engagement in daily activities within the inpatient setting.
- Working towards discharge planning in collaboration with the community OT team.
- You will be part of a compassionate team who are committed to our patients wellbeing.
- A broader network of Mental Health OTs across the Mullingar area
- Line management provided by a dedicated Mental Health Occupational Therapy Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver Occupational therapy interventions to older adults with cognitive, physical, and mental health needs.
- Conduct comprehensive assessments with a focus on functional ability, cognitive function, and daily living skills
- Develop and implement compensatory strategies that support autonomy and participation in meaningful activities.
- Complete specialist seating assessments and interventions for clients with complex needs.
- Facilitate individual and group-based programmes within the inpatient environment.
- Support the discharge planning process in close collaboration with the Community Later Life Psychiatry OT team.
- Contribute to the development of the OT service, engage in clinical audit, and support best practice initiatives.
- Work as part of a committed multidisciplinary team, including nursing, psychiatry, social work, and psychology.
Essential Requirements:
- BSc or MSc in Occupational Therapy (or equivalent qualification recognised by CORU)
- CORU Registration (essential)
- A strong interest in working with older adults in a mental health context.
- Confidence in delivering compensatory and enabling interventions.
- A collaborative and person-centred approach to care planning and rehabilitation.
- Experience or interest in seating and positioning interventions.
- A collaborative, recovery-oriented, and person-centred approach.
- Excellent clinical reasoning, communication, and documentation skills.
