Job Seeking Tips: Dealing with Job Rejection Part 2; after the interview.

Last week we discussed the 5 ways to deal with rejection after applying for a job. This week we will approach the subject of rejection after an interview. We have all been there before; we put a lot of effort and energy into an interview only to be told we were unsuccessful. There is no denying that this can be quite a confidence shaker but there are ways to deal with it, and use the rejection as a means to improve your interview skills.
1. Don't take it personally.
Although it may seem difficult; the best thing you can do is avoid taking the rejection personally. There could be any number of reasons you didn't get the job and realistically the interviewer is not going to give you every detail as to why you were not successful. Do not take the rejection as something to measure your professional and personal worth; you were interviewed because you had the experience for the role but there are certain criteria that every company has and perhaps you didn't meet this company's criteria but that doesn't mean you won't meet that of another business'.
2. Don't tell yourself you failed.
At Excel Recruitment we know how difficult it is to deal with rejection after an interview but it is important that you don't see it as a failure. You didn't fail the interview and it is not a reflection on your professional abilities and experience. It was a one-time-thing and if a company did not see you as suitable for the way they run things, perhaps the company wouldn't have been suited to you.
3. Don't point fingers.
No good will come of blaming former employers, trick questions or external happenings on not getting the job. This will only add to the negative feeling of getting a rejection letter or call and will stop you from building on the experience and doing better next time.
4. Learn from your mistakes.
That old cliché? Yes but clichés are clichés for a reason; they are mostly true. There is no harm in asking why you didn't get the job; this is something we always ask on behalf of our candidates if they have been unsuccessful in an interview. It means that you can accept the hiccups you might have made and make sure that you don't do it again; as well as that it might make you realise that you need to focus on certain positive aspects of your experience next time.
5. Get advice.
Interviews are tough and they require specific skills and techniques so don't be afraid to ask someone for advice for your next interview.
